Urban and Social Regeneration

Urban and Social
Regeneration

We promote urban transformations through the activation of relationships and the rethinking of spaces. By placing the needs of communities at the center, we accompany every stage of regeneration and activate lasting governance models.

Shifton - Urban and Social Regeneration
Regenerating spaces to reactivate relationships

Our approach to urban regeneration relies on four actions: transforming places, activating relationships, innovating services, and narrating change.

Regeneration and co-design of spaces

Through co-design, we build new scenarios, envisioning functions, experiences, and services capable of bringing these places to life. This work goes hand in hand with the experimentation of shared and dynamic governance models that foster alliances among diverse stakeholders and support lasting transformation processes. Our focus also extends to the ecologies of the territory, considering the relationship with both the urban and the non-human environment.

Placemaking and community engagement
Open or close accordion

We start from the enhancement of the social and cultural capital already present in the territories, building connections among diverse actors and promoting antifragile networks capable of addressing social fragmentation, depopulation, and marginalization. Through community workshops, capacity-building programs, events, and festivals, we support the emergence of new forms of representation, experimenting with light, collaborative, and situated design practices.

Cultural welfare and community-based services
Open or close accordion

We work on the relationship between care and culture, fostering the creation of learning communities and open, accessible spaces connected to their territories. We move beyond a welfare-based vision of health and promote frameworks that do not isolate but include: places of care, community schools, and cultural spaces that can rethink themselves as part of a broader urban ecosystem.

Participatory storytelling

Territorial transformation processes do not end with the project but are consolidated through the narratives that accompany them. Our approach integrates co-design, visual communication, and storytelling to build shared narratives capable of giving meaning to the paths undertaken and engaging new audiences. Communication thus becomes a ground for learning, a device for civic activation, and a tool at the service of communities—one through which to generate awareness, build memory, and produce impact.

We work closely with both public and private organizations to develop innovative solutions capable of shaping places.

People, places, more-than-human forms of life: we nurture these relationships to make spaces and territories more inclusive and dynamic.

From concept to process

Every project is different, but our approach follows clear and defined steps: understanding needs and building shared visions, then translating them into strategies and activating the community to become the protagonist.

01
Understanding the territory

We gather perspectives, needs, and desires through site visits, observation, and interviews with stakeholders and local communities.

Activities

• Qualitative interviews
• Ethnography
• Field observation and site visits

02
Co-design and envisioning

We foster dialogue among diverse actors, stimulating imagination and creativity to design future scenarios and chart new paths of transformation.

Activities

• Workshop di co-design
• Scenario-building e specultative design
• Workshop di identità e storytelling

03
Strategic Design

We translate ideas and desires into concepts of spaces, functions, governance, and identity, creating strategic tools that support the overall design process.

Activities

• Concept ideation
• Development of strategic roadmaps
• Design of visual identities and project narratives

04
Activation and support

We develop workshops and capacity-building programs, experiment with temporary governance models and service prototypes, to strengthen communities and collaborations.

Activities

• Facilitation of collaborative processes
• Activation of temporary multistakeholder governance
• Training and capacity building

Partners and clients

The most vital substance of a space is invisible. Relationships, memories, vibrations. Of those who have passed through, and those yet to come.
