The project
Adriano Community Days is a popular festival in the Adriano neighbourhood: two days of events organised throughout the district, carried out directly by the associations in the area and its inhabitants.
At its first edition on 23 and 24 November 2019, the neighbourhood came alive thanks to a collective calendar of activities, all strictly free, inclusive and promoted through a bottom-up approach.
Culture, Community and Well-being are the three keywords of the event.
Proges and Shifton organise Adriano Community Days as part of Lacittàintorno, a programme by Fondazione Cariplo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Milan.
The challenge
How to activate the communities of the Adriano neighbourhood of Milan to involve them in a regeneration process that sees them as protagonists? How to bring out the submerged energies and the creative potential of the neighbourhood’s inhabitants?
The strategy
To activate the inhabitants of Adriano and the associations in the area, we designed a two-day festival in which the various souls of the neighborhood can find space.
Through an open call, we collected ideas and projects to be carried out during the Festival, thus mapping Adriano’s creative energies. Therefore, we established the Festival schedule, consisting of 63 events in 20 spaces in the neighbourhood, with 24 associations involved.
The process
We made a dedicated online platform available for the Call for Ideas, on which citizens, groups, associations uploaded their proposed activities. The open call, open for one month, was accompanied by creative co-design workshops to support the participants.
The development of the event’s online and offline communication strategy and the coordination of the press offices were added to the construction phase of the schedule; the development of graphic identity; the conception and organisation of the launch event; the management of relationships between all project partners.
The impact
The dense schedule of events has shown a neighbourhood that is eager to act and discuss its evolution with enthusiasm. The activities made it possible to attract audiences of different ages, origins and interests, generating cultural and intergenerational exchange.
With the Festival of the Adriano neighbourhood, we have mapped the energies of the community, drawing up a stakeholder map and prototypes of replicable services in the neighbourhood and the Adriano Community Centre, a hybrid model of a community hub and nursing home opened in Adriano in spring 2020.
